Claim This! – Though the earth gives way… (Psalms 46:1-3)

Today’s Reading: Psalms 46-52

Today’s Reflection: Psalms 46:1-3

1) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  2) Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, 3) though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.  Selah.

Throughout the Bible there are numerous promises of God’s goodness, provision and protection.  It’s easy to get caught up in the epic sweep and lyricism of the language and think of language like ‘mountains moved into the sea’ as metaphorical.  But the truth is, more often than not, the extraordinary geological, extreme weather events or other amazing phenomena described in these promises are meant quite literally.

In the book of Genesis alone we see: the earth flooded by waters, wiping away all but 8 people (Genesis 6-8), human speech instantly splintered into dozens of languages causing confusion and chaos (Genesis 11:1-9), two powerful cities reduced to ash by fire and brimstone (Genesis 19), 7 years of famine that devastate the entire world (Genesis 41).  These events have happened before and more like them are to come.

In recent years we’ve seen the 2006 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, the deadly 2006 heat wave in Europe, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Icelandic volcanic ash clouds that cut off air travel to Europe in 2010 and 2011, the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Superstorm Sandy devastating New Jersey in the United States and all but wiping out the Jersey Shore in 2012, F5 tornadoes wiping out towns and cities in Oklahoma and flooding in Alberta, Canada, drowning downtown Calgary so far in 2013.  Prophesy tells us there is even worse to come (Matthew 24:7-8).

Which is why this promise should give us hope and comfort.  No matter how bad it gets our God is a present help.  In troubling times like ours He is a refuge.  No matter what happens we have no need to fear, for the God who sees and knows all has us in the palms of His hands.

Psalms 47:9 – The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham.  For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!
