The Word in the World

The Word in the World – When you can’t deny it any longer… (Exodus 8:16-19)

Today’s Reading: Exodus 8-10

Today’s Reflection: Exodus 8:16-19

16) And the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch out thy rod, and smite the dust of the land, that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.  17) And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.  18) And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.  19) Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.

God produced many signs and plagues through Moses to convince the Pharaoh and people of Egypt that Moses had been sent by the Lord and spoke on His behalf (Exodus 4:1-17).  But each time he produced a sign or plague from God, Pharaoh brought out his own magicians who appeared to be able to perform the same feat.  Moses turned his rod into a snake; so did the magicians (Exodus 7:10-12).  Moses turned water into blood; so did the magicians (Exodus 7:20-22).  Moses made frogs come forth from the waters, so did the magicians (Exodus 8 1-7).  This only strengthened Pharaoh’s resolve: See?  This God of Israel is nothing special.  My own magicians can do the same thing.

That was until the third plague.

Moses struck the dust of the earth turning it into gnats—tiny flying bugs.  The magicians tried, and tried, but with all of their dark arts they could not replicate this feat.  Finally they had to concede the truth: as they stated in Exodus 8 verse 19, this miracle was from “the finger of God”.  Witch doctors and sorcerers became believers.

Over the past few hundred years, much of the world has been occupied with trying to prove it doesn’t need God.  Darwin said life came about through cosmic accident, Nietzsche proclaimed God was dead, the industrial revolution and progress have done away with much of the uncertainty about meeting ones daily needs (for a certain portion of the population in a certain part of the world anyways) so no need to pray for daily bread.  No need for Biblical morality, we can govern ourselves.  Why save sex for marriage?  We know how to have safer sex.  And of course there’s no need for the traditional nuclear family of father, mother and children anymore.

Except science and research studies are now finding…

Both boys and girls who grow up without fathers have much higher incidences of high risk behaviour through adolescence and early adulthood.  Married couples have more satisfying sex, and promiscuous singles limit their chances of ever winding up in successful monogamous relationships.  Prayer has positive health and emotional benefits, including strengthening the part of your brain that ‘starts-up’ your body when you wake up each morning.  What we’ve called ‘progress’ over the past 5 centuries is slowly killing us and destroying our planet.  Life is far more complex and the earth much younger than previously believed.  Irreducible complexity (certain biological systems that could not have evolved from an earlier version or species) makes Darwinian macro-evolution (the transforming of one species into another) a virtual impossibility.

Increasingly even skeptics are being forced to admit that the finger of God is present here.
